Are we focusing on getting the right things done or are we spending time getting anything done? Some of us are getting the right things done at work, but not at home and vice versa.
Get the right things done – What We Want
Getting the right things done means letting go of the idea of getting everything done we want to do. Yes, we cannot do everything that we want. We have to focus on what's most important. We have to let go of the things that are not so important. Trying to do everything is merely maddening.
Most of us who are not focused on getting the right things done end up getting nothing done. Everything is in progress, or if accomplished, turns out meaningless.
There are two major issues people have when they are trying to get things done. 1) They focus on the big picture skipping a bunch of steps along the way, and 2) They are so focused on random steps that they fail to roll up each task and step into anything concrete.
It's like riding a roller coaster indefinitely. You keep on going up and down, around bends and turns, passing the place you started from over and over, and never accomplishing anything.
Don't be that person. Define your process so by determining what you want your outcome to look like. Select benchmarks as objectives to reach as you step towards the outcome you desire. Create individual tasks that you can check off as you complete each one to ultimately achieve your objective.
The Right Things Done Personally & Professionally
Determine what projects you would like to accomplish, paying attention to both your professional and personal life. List them out, and assign a priority to them using a number.
Now, start with the most important and determine your objectives that are required to accomplish the project. Can you reasonably do this project? Do you have the resources and time?
You may need to table a project and focus on others that you are able to accomplish. Create tasks for each objective once you have determined the projects that you can reasonably complete. Your tasks need to be broken down into single steps that are easily accomplished in one sitting.
The process is going to take considerable time but will help you to accomplish your goals and create satisfactory results for you.

For companies to be competitive, leaders must engage people at all levels in order to focus their energy and enable them to apply lean principles to everything they do. If you have ever attended or read an 'Introduction to Problem Solving', then you should skip this book.
Very rudimentary - and definitely not worth the price. Published by a niche publisher for a select market, so it's spendy. Mind Tools offers a bunch of free templates and instructions, I recommend checking them out instead: http://www.mindtools.com/pages/articl..
Okay, I'm taking credit for this! Clearly not my standard genre :) I hope my professor isn't on goodreads, or I may get a lower grade for rating it so poorly..
What to say about this book? There was certainly some useful information buried in there. Unfortunately, it was covered by more undefined jargon than I've seen in a long time, and I work in the computer industry, so I'm pretty accustomed to jargon. Also, it was written at a third-grade reading level. Seriously, Dick and Jane would have fit comfortably in the narrative. Heck, Spot probably could have read it to them.
I must confess that I'm disappointed. I'm not sure if I'm disappointed that my Op..more
I read this book as part of my work with the family company W.S. Badger and found it helpful as well in the work I do at MicroAire (the company I work for). If you have a business or want to figure out how to improve your work through better data, clearer planning and process improvement with clear goals in mind. This is a very helpful good. It includes forms that you can copy and map things out for yourself.
This is something I read in preparation for a lean training at work. It takes you step-by-step through the problem solving process by telling a story and what a specific organization did. It makes big issues seem pretty easy to solve - by explaining that they're not easy to solve and things take time. Highly recommended when combined with other lean learnings.
Pascal's lean novel is easy to read and keeps you focused. His inherent knowledge of the TPS makes his books standard material for any lean pursuit.
Easy to read and easy to implement the tools immediately.
Go to the Gemba - - the real place, where the action happens. Do not hide problems, they are the treasures that must be made visible. If Get’r Done is action without theory, it is aimless. Getting the right things done is key. Asking a lot of questions is lean! True North is a contract, a bond, not merely a wish list. The book carefully and linearly lays out the concepts. After reading the book, I feel like I got most of the points it was trying to make. Still, while the content gets across, it's a painful read in some ways. The presentation is in story mode, centered on a fictional company and staff. All conflict between the staff as the new management style is introduced is glossed over and marginalized. It felt like I was reading a story to my preschooler, where everyone tries their best and it all turns o..more
I've got to say. This was a hard book to finish; meaning it wasn't enjoyable to read. The example they told in the book had absolutely no relation to what I currently do in my field. Even tho the author does point that out, but I just found that they delve into it too much. So much unnecessary detail, charts, etc. The underlining meaning of leadership and ensuring you are getting the right things done were just so convoluted within the storyline.
The book is written like a case study with direct speech by different employees at Atlas Industries. The story telling and character development are pretty weak, but the A3 report sheets are something I would like to use for my organisation too, the templates in the book will make it easy to do so.

Getting the Right Things Done helpt je een antwoord te vinden op volgende vragen:
* Hoe werkt 'strategy deployment'? * Hoe voer ik een geslaagde implementatie uit? * Wat zijn de onderliggende 'mental models' en hoe verschillen zij van traditioneel management denken? * Wat voor management stijl is wanneer nodig?
A very good and straight forward book for LEAN project methodology. The principles were presented in more story fashion. The concepts make sense so it will be interesting to apply them to projects outside of the manufacturing industry.

It’s the beginning of a new year and productivity experts are out again hawking new apps to help you work faster and better in 2019.
The emphasis on productivity is nothing new. Many years ago I heard a quote attributed to Thomas Edison:
If we did all the things we are capable of, we would literally astound ourselves.
I have been haunted by quotes like this all my life.
On the first page of What’s Best Next: How the Gospel Transforms the Way You Get Things Done, Matt Perman puts his finger on the problem that has dogged me throughout my career:
Most of us are feeling that we have way too much to do and too little time in which to do it. As David Allen points out, the process of managing our work is often messy and overflows its banks. Behind closed doors, after hours, there remain unanswered calls, tasks to be delegated, unprocessed issues from meetings and conversations, personal responsibilities unmanaged, and dozens of emails still not dealt with.
In the very next paragraph, Perman sums up the frustration we all feel at the end of a long day of work when we feel we did not get done what we really wanted to accomplish.
This is especially unfortunate because we live at an incredibly exciting time in history. Many of us love our jobs and find the world of work exciting. We have more opportunity to do good than ever before and more opportunity to do creative, challenging work than perhaps at any point in history.
Many of us believe what holds us back is a failure to become both more productive and better at managing our time and resources. Over the years I have read countless books on productivity and time management, gone to numerous seminars, and used almost every system, from the paper-based Franklin-Covey planner to my current high-tech adaptation of David Allen’s Getting Things Done. The latest productivity advice is to make sure you’re having enough fun and building transparent relationships with your coworkers.
While this quest has brought a certain level of organization to the chaos of my life, I still haven’t found a system for managing everything that works well for me.
Perman suggests that the aim of What’s Best Next is to reshape the way we think about productivity. He then presents a practical approach to help us become more effective in our lives with less stress and frustration.
The book achieves this goal by doing something unique in comparison to other books of this genre. In parts one and two of the book, Perman lays out a solid, biblical reason for why we should be getting things done by exploring the bigger picture of productivity in God’s plan.
This idea of gospel-driven productivity calls us to:
…use all that we have, in all areas of life, for the good of others, to the glory of God…to be on the lookout to do good for others to the glory of God, in all areas of life, and to do this with creativity and competence.
Next, in parts three through seven, the book moves from practical theology to practical application. This is the how that is the basis for most books written on this subject. Here Perman pulls together the best secular thinking around the idea of productivity by viewing it through the lens of his gospel-driven model.
He writes that this idea of gospel-driven productivity…
…also means actually knowing how to get things done, so that we can serve others in a way that really helps, in all areas of life, without making ourselves miserable in the process through overload, overwhelm, and hard-to-keep up productivity systems.
Getting The Right Things Done
This new perspective makes it clear that we as Christians are called “to put productivity practices and tools in the service of God’s purposes.”
This is not a book you can skim through to pick up a couple of good ideas. As Justin Taylor writes,
To my knowledge, there is no one writing today who has thought more deeply about the relationship between the gospel and productivity. You will find in these pages a unique and remarkable combination of theological insight, biblical instruction, and practical counsel that would change the world if put into practice.
In the final analysis, Perman explains that from a biblical perspective productivity isn’t just about getting more things done; it’s about getting the right things done. This book shows us how to effectively do the work that matters in order to bring glory to God, serve the common good, and further his kingdom in the here and now.
